The company confirmed to GamesIndustry International that is was "in the process of investigating early sales to determine how and why this is occurring".
The problem revolves around online retailer Amazon, which has dispatched copies of the game to consumers who pre-ordered the title. Images from social media services have confirmed the leak.
As well as Amazons breaking of the street date for Grand Theft Auto V, a bricks and mortar game store in Paris has reportedly been selling copies of the game in advance of its release as well.
There is also a video on YouTube apparently showing an 11-year-old child being given an early copy of the game as a gift.
At this point it might be useful to know that GTA V has a PEGI 18 rating in the UK and an ESRB rating of "Mature" in North America due to: "Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humour, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol."
The games predecessor, GTA IV, suffered a similar fate as copies of the title were purchased ahead of the official release date of 29 April, 2008.
